My favorite GPS App is Waze. I use it on every road trip even if I already know how to get to our destination.
The best part of Waze is how it is constantly updated in real time. It has a strong community of Wazers that report things from wrecks, traffic, construction to hiding police speed traps and more.
My first impression of Waze was that it seemed a little childlike, you had to select a little Waze character. After actually using it , it became my favorite and most used App while traveling. Plus it is actually pretty fun to choose your character (mood) and earn points and unlock things.
I feel confident I will make it to my destination quickly and accurately using Waze. I have used it for many years and have had only minor issues.
As with any GPS app I always look over the route to ensure it is taking me to where I want to go. One time I was trying to find a hiking trail to a waterfall in Arkansas, and the GPS took me to some guys land and up to his trailer house. My experiences with many different GPS devices is if it’s something off the beaten path, make sure you have accurate coordinates set as the final destination. It is not actually the GPS’ fault.
I am not the only lover of this app, Google purchased the company (for a billion+ I believe) and have been helping make Waze even better. My grandparents both have downloaded this app and they use it regularly as they drive. It just goes to show you it is not too complex and anyone can easily use it as they travel.
Another reason I love Waze is because you can send a link of your live map showing your drive with the eta. I sent it to Kayla’s grandma when we drove to California to meet her for the first time. She was able to see where we where and what time we would arrive. She didn’t even have to download the app.
Download Waze and give it a try! It is available for Apple and Android products. It may soon save you time and money on your next road trip! Oh and by the way it is completely free!

And I prefer using a navigation app Spyglass that supports different maps, depending on my current needs: google maps, apple maps, open street map and open cycle map. It saves an opened map area in a cache so you can use it later when offline. Besides, it has many useful features for those people that are not very good at orienting. The app shows your current position on the map, can save waypoints and locations, for example, your car or your hotel location. https://itunes.apple.com/app/spyglass/id332639548?mt=8&at=11lLc7&ct=c
I have not heard of spyglass, sounds very interesting indeed. The fact that you can view the map offline is very appealing. I will have to check it out! Thanks for your comment!
I’ve never used Waze but heard of it! I’ll have to check it out (living in LA I’m guessing it will be useful!).
I think it’s worth trying! Once you get it figured out its a very useful tool! 🙂
Great article. I started using Waze about a year ago and never go on any long trips without having it open. It’s saved me countless hours and has hands down been the best GPS app I have used.
Glad to hear you agree! I love when I find a free app that is so useful! Do you have any apps you recommend Paul?
