On our trip to the Gulf Coast we had a stop in Tupelo, Mississippi where we got to see the Birthplace of Elvis Presley.
After visiting the Tupelo National Battlefield we headed to the Birthplace of Elvis Presley.
What’s there to see at the Birthplace of Elvis Presley?
At Elvis’ Birthplace you get to see the house he was born in, some of the cars his family had when he was a child, the church he attended, a museum, statues and more. It is very inspiring seeing the humble beginnings of Elvis Presley.
Our Experience at the Birthplace of Elvis Presley
There are some things that cost at the Birthplace but much of it you can experience for free. Being a mostly budget travel family during our Gulf Coast Trip we opted for the free route.
There are many statues and informative sights that show the stages of Elvis’ childhood.
Childhood Home
Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935 to Vernon and Gladys Presley. He was born in the two room house which was built by his father, grandfather and uncle.
Elvis’ parents could not afford the house and the $180 loan, causing them to move out when Elvis was only a few years old. They moved around Mississippi multiple times until eventually leaving for Memphis.
The house he was born in is so small it’s impressive seeing it compared to his house in Graceland. You can walk around the house and swing in the front porch swing. For an additional price you can walk inside the house with the purchase of one of the tours.
Elvis Presley’s Childhood Church
Elvis’ childhood church was moved from its original location to the Birthplace and restored to its original condition. It is very cool to see and you can “attend a service” with showings every 30 minutes during their hours. This is where he originally heard gospel music that influenced his style.
Fountain Display
Near the end of the loop is a wonderful fountain with signs highlighting important times in his life.
Gift Shop and Museum
Inside the main building there are clean restrooms, a gift shop and a museum. We walked through the gift shop, looked at the signs, but did not go through the museum considering it costs extra and this was just a quick stop on our adventure.
Seeing the sights and the cars were a great bonus. It was surprising how much we were able to see for free and we recommend stopping by on a road trip.
