Part 3 – Middle of the Mojave Desert to Las Vegas, Nevada
This is Part 3 of our Route 66 Road Trip we took back in July of 2013. Part 3 includes our experience driving from the Mojave Desert to Las Vegas and our experience staying on the Vegas Strip.
If you have not already please read Part 2 where we traveled from New Mexico to the Grand Canyon.
We had miraculously arrived in Las Vegas at our first hotel the Stratosphere despite the desert heat and the car issues we had been having. I had never been to Vegas so I did not know quite what to expect other than bright flashy lights and the sounds of slot machines sucking up peoples money.
We ran up to our room, changed clothes and searched for auto mechanics in the area.(Because our car was still having overheating issues) Luckily there was a Honda Specialist called Wally’s so I left him an email and a voicemail explaining our situation hoping he would squeeze us in first thing in the morning.
We spent the rest of the evening checking out a small portion of the Vegas strip, exploring only a small portion of what Vegas had to offer before heading to bed.
We woke the next morning excited to check into the Wynn (our one fancy hotel of the trip) and drop off the car at the shop. It was Kayla and I’s 2nd Wedding Anniversary so we had decided to stay at the Wynn. Wow was it amazing, it was the nicest hotel I have stayed at to date of this writing. Upon opening our rooms door and sliding on the lights, our curtains auto opened from across the room as we soaked in an amazing view of the Las Vegas Strip.
The room had a giant tub, a TV screen in the bathroom, a big soft King size bed but nothing compared to the giant glass wall with the most gorgeous view you could imagine.
We had a full day of exploring Las Vegas, in the middle of the day we got a call from our mechanic to pick up our car that he looked over. Wally’s mechanic was by far the nicest, honest and caring mechanic I had ever met. He did not charge us a dime and he gave us some ideas of what the issue and told us what kind of parts to pick up on our way to California.
After returning our car to the Wynn’s parking garage we continued exploring the strip. I had never seen anything so bright and colorful. I loved how Vegas displays many different parts of the world in the designs of the Casinos and Hotels.
In that day despite having to drop off the car and pick it back up we saw the majority of “New Vegas” Strip and now will have to make another trip to see what we missed of the strip and all of “Old Vegas” and despite all our troubles this trip was still one of our greatest adventures yet and we were having a blast!
Part 4 of the West Route 66 Trip will be up soon! Currently working on the story and photos !
Thanks for reading, please comment and share. Have you been to Las Vegas? How did you feel about it? Does it live up to the hype?
I love road trips! I did a section of 66 quite a few years ago with my wife and I’d love to bring my kids there as well. Thanks for all the tips!
