Elephant seal beach (Viewing the wild elephant seals of California)
This is a must see if you are taking a California Coast Road Trip.
Our biggest surprise when driving the coast of Cali on highway 1 was the elephant seal beach. I had done some research on cruising the coast but was unaware of this amazing place and almost missed out on it because we were running short on time. I remember looking out my window and seeing some giant creatures chilling on the beach. Much bigger than the sea lions we saw the day before in Monterey.
But I kept seeing signs saying no pulling over or stop to view elephant seals. I was hoping there would be a place to pull over soon I just had to get a closer look at these amazing animals.
Finally, we arrived at Elephant Seal Vista Point. There were plenty of parking spaces and a fenced trail so you could enjoy the Elephant Seals without interfering with their habitat. They were all laid out relaxing along the beach. The lines of Elephant Seals seemed to go on for miles. A few were taking a swim in the ocean and some of the males were battling for territory. They would lift their heads up and growl making hilarious burping sounds at each other. Cash was cracking up.
Finding the Elephant Seals was one of our favorite parts of our entire California Road Trip. It was completely free, really entertaining and an overall amazing experience that was unplanned and completely random.
